This week, Elijah Hippe shared a word on throwing off passivity as we move into 2024. We are called to go and make disciples, but often passivity keeps us from obeying the Lord. By actively initiating with the Lord and with others, we can be a people who partner with God to bring His Kingdom to Tacoma.

Galatians 2:20
“20I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

“The problem in the church today is not the profession of faith, but it’s
possession.”

Passivity: acceptance of what happens, without active response or resistance.

Matthew 28:19-20
“19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Matthew 5:14-16
“14 You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that[a] they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

John 4:28
“28 Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, 29 ‘Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?’ 30 They came out of the town and made their way toward him.”

“I set myself on fire and people come to watch me burn.” -John Wesley

John 3:16
“16 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Matthew 28:19-20
“19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

1. Go and make disciples.

Isaiah 26:3
“3 You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”

2. Teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.

3. Behold He is with us until the end of the age.

Discussion Questions:

  1. For God to move we must die to ourselves. Are you living for Jesus or for other things? Are there ways you could die to yourself so that God can use you fully?
  2. One way to make disciples is through life-on-life discipleship. Who are you discipling? Who is discipling you? If you are currently not discipling or being discipled, how could you start?
  3. Is there passivity in your relationship with the Lord? What is God asking you to do to throw off passivity?

Application Questions:

  1. Before we initiate with others, we must initiate with God. Sit with the Lord this week and ask Him if there is any passivity in your life or in your relationship with Him. Ask if passivity is holding you back from making disciples. Is there someone you can invite to church?
