In this week’s message Lead Pastor Chris Hippe delivers, “Take Your Mind Back,”. We’re reminded that the battle for freedom often begins in our thoughts. The enemy uses lies, fear, and deception to distort how we see ourselves, our circumstances, and God’s truth. But we don’t have to believe every thought that enters our minds—we can take our thoughts captive, reject the lies, and intentionally focus on what is true and rooted in God’s Word. As we surrender our minds to Christ, we can experience the peace and freedom He has for us.

Proverbs 4:23 (ESV)

23 Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.

Philippians 4:8–9 (ESV)

8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

You are only as free as your mind is.

Genesis 3:1 (ESV)

1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”

Genesis 3:4–5 (ESV)

4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Jesus came to set our minds free.

1 Peter 1:13 (ESV)

13 Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

The mind is the main battlefield of good and evil.

2 Corinthians 10:3–5 (ESV)

3 For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. 5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,

We are the gate keepers of our minds.

James 4:7 (ESV)

7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

The enemy is a liar.

John 8:43–44 (ESV)

43 Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word. 44 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Revelation 12:9 (ESV)

9 And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world…

Discussion Questions:

  1. The sermon says, “You are only as free as your mind is.” What do you think this means, and how can our thought patterns keep us from experiencing the freedom Jesus offers?
  2. Proverbs 4:23 tells us to guard our hearts because everything we do flows from them. How do the thoughts we entertain influence our emotions, decisions, and relationships?
  3. Read 2 Corinthians 10:3–5. What does it look like in everyday life to take a thought captive and make it obedient to Christ? How can we tell the difference between a thought we should challenge and a truth we need to accept?

Application Questions:

  1. Is there a recurring though or lie you’ve been believing that gods truth challenges? What Scripture or truth can you use to replace it?
  2. What is one practical step you can take this week to guard your mind and focus more intentionally on God’s truth?
