This week, Pastor Chris started our Christmas Peace series. During the Christmas season, most people are looking for peace but instead experience stress and hurry. God offers us a heart-level, lasting peace the world cannot give. Through a relationship with Jesus, we have peace with God, ourselves, and those around us.

3 Kinds of Peace…

  1. Spiritual peace ~ eternal peace with God.
  2. Emotional peace ~ internal peace with yourself.
  3. Relational peace ~ external peace with other people

1. Jesus is the Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:6 (ESV)
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

The Prince of Peace…
• Would make right all wrongs.
• Heal all that has been broken.
• Restore to wholeness all relationships.
• Would restore to wholeness the broken relationship between humans and their God.

Philippians 4:7 (The Message)
7 Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.

Matthew 8:25–26 (ESV)
25 And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” 26 And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.

Peace is something everyone wants, yet few seem to find.
• Peace can be defined as “tranquility, harmony, or security.”
• Hebrew ~ refers not only to the absence of conflict but also the presence of completeness.
• Greek ~ refers to rest and tranquility.

Luke 2:14 (ESV)
14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!

Luke 2:14 (MSG)
14 Glory to God in the heavenly heights, Peace to all men and women on earth who please him.

2. Jesus is called the Lord of peace.

2 Thessalonians 3:16 (ESV)
16 Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you all.

“Safety consists not in the absence of danger but in the presence of God.”
Source Unknown.

3. Only Jesus can give real peace.

John 14:27 (ESV)
27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

4. Jesus Gives us Peace with God.

2 Corinthians 5:17–18 (ESV)
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation;

Christian reconciliation is the work of God through Christ by which He restores mankind to a favorable relationship with Himself.

Romans 5:1–2 (ESV)
1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

Matthew 2:11 (ESV)
11 And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.

• Gold for a King.
• Frankincense for a priest offering up a burnt offering.
• Myrrh for an incomparable sacrifice used in embalming.

You can’t have the peace OF until you have the peace WITH God.

Corrie ten Boom said, “Look at the world—you’ll be distressed. Look within—you’ll be depressed. Look at Christ—you’ll be at rest.”

Discussion Questions:

  1. Do you recognize a lack of peace in your life?
  2. What would it look like for you to having deep, heart-level, biblical peace in your unique situation? What would feel like inwardly? How would it effect your relationships?
  3. Are there ways you are trying to find peace in things or circumstances rather than in Jesus?
  4. Is there a way you may be out of alignment with the Lord that is leading to a lack of peace?
  5. Chris mentioned that we please God by being right with Him through Jesus. Is there an area in your life where you try to please God apart from Jesus?

Application Questions:

  1. Spend time this week evaluating if there is a lack of peace somewhere in your life (it could relationally, in a circumstance, ect.). Is there an area where you are out of alignment with Him? Is there an idol that has taken Jesus’ place on the throne of your heart? Spend some time in prayer, repentance and thanksgiving for God’s forgiveness!
