This week Young Adult Pastor Adina Olson shared a powerful message on the Church in Sardis. In Revelation 3:1–6, Jesus speaks to the church in Sardis with a sobering warning: they had a reputation for being alive, but Jesus saw that they were spiritually dying. Yet His message is also an invitation to wake up, remember what they received, strengthen what remains, and repent. This passage challenges us to examine the true condition of our walk with God, reminding us that outward appearance cannot replace genuine communion with Him. Jesus calls His church back to spiritual life, prayer, repentance, and faithful relationship with Him.

Revelation 3:1-6

And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: ‘The words of him who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your works. You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead. 2Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God. 3Remember, then, what you received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come against you.4 Yet you have still a few names in Sardis, people who have not soiled their garments, and they will walk with me in white, for they are worthy.5The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life. I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels. 6 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

Jesus introduces Himself in:

Revelation 3:1a

“The words of him who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars.”

Isaiah 11:1–2:

There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit. And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.

Revelation does not introduce us to a different Jesus; it unveils the fullness of the risen Jesus, the crucified Lamb, the Worthy One, the Almighty, who now reigns as King.

JESUS’ HONEST REVIEW

Revelation 3: 1b-2

I know your works. You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead. 2Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God.

Sardis had become a prayerless church.

Andrew Murray said, “Effectual working needs first effectual prayer.”

The work of our hands cannot remain spiritually alive if our hearts have stopped communing with God. Prayerlessness is often born in a moment of excuse but sustained by a lifetime of neglect. Prayer is not simply a task. The Holy Spirit is saying to the church, prayer is not another task. Prayer is communing with God in our secret place where we can carry out what has been trusted to us. In that place you hear his voice, you get filled with something.Prayerlessness is often born in a moment of excuse but sustained by a lifetime of neglect. Remember, God says come to him because he gives daily bread. Telling the church, come and get your own.

Revelation 3:3

Remember, then, what you received and heard. Keep it, and repent.

I Will Come Like a Thief – God needs the fruit of repentance

Revelation 3:3b

If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come against you.

The Garments – Offering cleansing and renewal to walk in righteousness, declaration we are with him in his presence.

Revelation 3:4

“Yet you have still a few names in Sardis, people who have not soiled their garments.”

Jesus says: “They will walk with me in white, for they are worthy.”

The Book of Life a kept record of who belongs to Him

Revelation 3:5

The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life. I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Why do you think Jesus addressed Sardis based on what He saw rather than what others saw? What does this teach us about whose evaluation of our lives ultimately matters?
  2. What does spiritual “wakefulness” look like in everyday life? How can we recognize when we are becoming spiritually asleep?
  3. Jesus promises that those who overcome will walk with Him in white garments and that He will confess their names before the Father. How should His promises affect the way we respond to His correction today?

Application Questions:

  1. What is one area of your relationship with God that you know needs to be strengthened right now? What is one practical step you can take this week?
  2. Where might God be asking you to repent; not simply feel sorry, but make a real change in your actions, priorities, or habits?
