This week, Community Life Leader Casey Mock shared an inspiring message about the importance of Life Groups! She reminded us of what the Bible teaches about living in community—how the early church devoted themselves to the Word, to fellowship, and to encouraging one another in the Lord. We strive to create that same environment in our Life Groups and, if you’re not already, would love for you to join one soon!
City Central replanted under Pastor Chris’ leadership in 2012, and the church began to grow. We began to ask, “How do we best provide a way for people to connect to others in the church family in a meaningful way and grow together?” So, we went to the Scriptures!
Acts 2:42, 46-48
And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers…And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.
Here is a biblical precedent we see set by the early church.
Components of a Biblical Community
- Eat together- Sharing a meal together is a sign of deep fellowship cutting through all other affiliations.
- Share- As the redeemed of Jesus, we do not belong to ourselves anymore; we belong to God and therefore God’s community. We discuss the sermon from Sunday and share our thoughts/struggles/victories the sermon surfaced.
- Pray- God often talks to us through the corporate and bearing each other’s burdens.
- Processing- Living out the Word of God and helping each other live transparent lives that honor God. Iron sharpens iron as one man sharpens another Proverbs 27:17
“The person who loves their dream of community will destroy community, but the person who loves those around them will create community.”
Dietrich Bonhoeffer
John 13:34-35
34A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you also must love one another. 35By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.
Hebrews 10:24-25
And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
Love one another by meeting together, praying for one another, carrying burdens sharing needs, and doing so as Jesus loves you!
God’s vision for the Church is a community of believers spurring one another on to a vibrant life in Christ.
- Strength- you receive strength and strengthen others through the encouragement of ta Life Group.
- We look out for one another- the beauty of Life Groups is that it isn’t all about you anymore! You get to look out for others and lift one another up.
- Community- Life Groups allow you to know people in the church and be known by others. Can you name 3-4 specific people in our church that you are looking out for and who are looking out for you?
Benefits of Biblical Community
- Connects us to the Body of Christ. (Romans 15:2)
- Helps us understand the Bible. (1 Corinthians 14:30-31)
- Prayer becomes more meaningful and powerful. (Matthew 18:19-20)
Discussion Questions:
- The sermon spoke about the importance of Life Groups in connecting people. What are some personal benefits you’ve experienced by being part of a Life Group? How has it strengthened your walk with Christ?
- The sermon mentioned the importance of sharing struggles, victories, and insights from the Sunday sermon. How can sharing our personal journeys help build trust and transparency in our groups? How can we create a safe environment for this sharing?
- Hebrews 10:24-25 encourages believers to “stir up one another to love and good works” and not neglect meeting together. What does that look like in practical terms for you even beyond Life Groups? How can you ensure you’re fulfilling this command in your group?
Application Question:
- Is there a specific person you want to reach out to or a habit you want to cultivate to take Life Group principles beyond your Life Group (like praying together, sharing meals, or encouraging others)?
