This week, City Central elder Darrin Miller taught on the parables of Jesus in Matthew 13. Jesus paints vivid pictures of what the Kingdom of Heaven is really like. Though small and hidden at first, the Kingdom grows, spreads, transforms, and proves to be of immeasurable worth. Whether you’ve walked with Jesus for decades or are still exploring who He is, these parables challenge us to reflect on what we value most—and to consider what it really means to surrender everything for the sake of something greater.
Matthew 13:31–33, 44–46
The bible reminds us that Jesus uses parables to reveal hidden truths of the kingdom and what eternal Christs reign looks like.
There are several related parables in Matthew 13 – the Kingdom of Heaven is like:
- The Mustard seed – starts small but serves a great purpose
- The yeast – works invisibly and thoroughly
- The treasure and pearl – it is worth everything
Matthew 13:31-33
31” He told them another parable: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. 32 Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.’ 33He told them still another parable: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds[a] of flour until it worked all through the dough.’”
The Parables of the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl
Matthew 13:44-46
44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. 45Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. 46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.”
The other Gospel writers use the term “Kingdom of God” –John Piper defines the Kingdom of Heaven like this: “the reign of God and Christ triumphing over everything that stands between us and everlasting life and joy.”
A treasure that surpasses everything this world has to offer.
2. The Mustard Seed:
Matthew 13:31–32
“The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.”
The Kingdom may look insignificant at first, but it grows into something far greater than imagined.
What small things are you doing right now in your life that you can be faithful in and believe God for the increase? The little seemingly insignificant deposits you make in your life.
3. The Yeast:
Matthew 13:33
“The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds of flour until it worked all through the dough.”
We serve, love, represent and act but God is the one moving and changing hearts – infiltrating and bringing salvation, grace and mercy into the world.
Even when we don’t see it!
3. The Hidden Treasure, The Pearl of Great Price:
Matthew 13:44-46
“44The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. 45Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. 46When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.”
The man in this parable realized that it was of limitless value – EVERYTHING he had.
This can be contrasted to the Rich Young Ruler from Matthew 19:21-22:
21 Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
22 When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.
The example here of the man who found this treasure – he saw and understood that this is life changing value. It is worth the cost of everything.
What if part of our surrender to Jesus is leaving our past behind for real:
- Our pain, our trauma, our past mistakes
Like a precious pearl or a hidden treasure, the Kingdom is worth more than anything else in life. It is the fulfillment of our deepest desires.
If you know Jesus as your Lord and Savior, then you are now God’s ambassador in this world. You are a representation of the one true King who is working in the world, and you are a key part of his plan.
Are you living this way? Or do you struggle to believe he has a plan and a purpose for your life?
Each parable paints a piece of the Kingdom picture:
- It starts small (mustard seed).
- It works invisibly and thoroughly (yeast).
- It is worth everything (treasure and pearl).
May we have eyes to see the Kingdom and hearts willing to joyfully surrender all to gain it.
Discussion Questions:
- What do you think Jesus meant when He compared the Kingdom of God to a mustard seed?
- Can you identify a “mustard seed” moment in your life—something that started small but grew into something greater by God’s grace?
- How does yeast working through dough help us understand how God’s Kingdom spreads and transforms?
- The man and the merchant both gave up everything with joy. What does that tell us about the true value of the Kingdom?
Application Questions:
- What small acts of faith is God calling you to today?
- Where is He working behind the scenes in your life?
- Are you willing to give up everything for what is truly valuable?
