This week, Pastor Chris continued our Christmas series with a powerful message highlighting the humility of Christ and His heart for everyone to know Him. Jesus entered the world in a lowly manner and rather than announcing His arrival to the powerful or the elite, the Lord chose to reveal it to the humble shepherds. This demonstrates that He came for all people and sets a profound example of humility for us to follow. The Lord continues to invite the humble to Himself today.
Luke 2:8–11a (ESV)
8 And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. 10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you…
- Jesus Came for You
Psalm 138:6 (NIV)
6 Though the Lord is on high, he looks upon the lowly, but the proud he knows from afar.
Luke 2:11–12 (ESV)
11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.”
2. He is the Savior, Christ, and Lord
Luke 2:13-16 (ESV)
13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”15 When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger.
3. We All Respond
John 4:29 (ESV)
29 “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did.
Matthew 28:6 (ESV)
6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.
“The very purpose of Christ’s coming into the world is that He might offer up His life as a sacrifice for the sins of men. He came to die. This is the heart of Christmas!”

Discussion Questions:
- Psalm 138:6 speaks about God’s attention to the lowly. Why do you think God chose to reveal the birth of Jesus to shepherds, a humble group of people? What does this tell us about God’s priorities?
- The angel’s message identifies Jesus as the Savior, Christ, and Lord. What do these three titles mean to you? How would you explain these to someone unfamiliar with the Christian faith?
- John 4:29 (the woman at the well) and Matthew 28:6 (the empty tomb) both invite people to come and see. How does an encounter with Jesus call us to share the good news with others?
- The shepherds responded with haste to see the baby Jesus (Luke 2:16). What might it look like in our lives to respond to Jesus with the same urgency and excitement?
Application Questions:
- How do you respond when you are reminded of the Christmas message? Do you find yourself in awe, in fear, in joy, or in something else? How can you make this season a time of intentional response?
