This week, guest speaker Pastor Samuel Lee brought a powerful message from Revelation 2:12–17, reminding us that while faithfulness may withstand persecution, we must also guard against the subtle compromises that pull us away from Christ. Through His powerful, life-giving Word, Christ calls His people to reject the subtle seductions of the world, repent of idolatry and compromising, and faithfully obey His truth. As we remain steadfast in His name and His Word, He promises His sustaining presence today and eternal reward to those who overcome.
Revelation 2:12-17 (ESV)
12 “And to the angel of the church in Pergamum write: ‘The words of him who has the sharp two-edged sword. 13 “‘I know where you dwell, where Satan’s throne is. Yet you hold fast my name, and you did not deny my faith even in the days of Antipas my faithful witness, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells. 14 But I have a few things against you: you have some there who hold the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, so that they might eat food sacrificed to idols and practice sexual immorality. 15 So also you have some who hold the teaching of the Nicolaitans. 16 Therefore repent. If not, I will come to you soon and war against them with the sword of my mouth. 17 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it.’
Christ Reveals Himself
“The One who has the sharp, double-edged sword.”
God’s Word is:
- Living and active (Hebrews 4:12)
- Powerful to expose, heal, and transform our hearts
- Our weapon in spiritual warfare (Ephesians 6:17)
God’s Word is given to:
- Teach — shows us the right path.
- Reprove — reveals where we’ve gone wrong.
- Correct — brings us back to God’s way.
- Train — teaches us to stay faithful. (2 Timothy 3:16–17)
Commended for Faithfulness
“You remain true to my name.”
The believers in Pergamum:
- Lived in a city filled with idolatry and emperor worship.
- Refused to deny Christ despite persecution.
- Remained faithful even after the martyrdom of Antipas.
Rebuked for Compromise
“I have a few things against you.”
The church resisted persecution but tolerated compromise.
False teaching led to:
- Idolatry
- Sexual immorality
- Blending worldly values with God’s truth
Satan’s strategies:
- Persecution if compromise won’t happen.
- Seduction if persecution fails.
Modern Forms of Idolatry
A. Love of Money
“You cannot serve both God and money.” (Matthew 6:24)
God’s design:
- Love God
- Love people
- Use money
The world’s pattern:
- Love money
- Use people
Antidote: Practice generosity.
People to love. Money to use.
B. My Choice Over God’s Word
Culture says:
“Do what feels right.”
God says:
“Follow My Word.”
God’s Word is:
- Our authority
- Our compass
- A lamp to our feet (Psalm 119:105)
Christ’s Call
Repent
Turn away from:
- Worldly compromise
- False teaching
- Self-directed living
Return to:
- God’s Word
- Obedience
- Faithfulness to Christ
Christ’s Promise to Overcomers
Those who remain faithful receive:
- Hidden manna — Christ’s daily spiritual nourishment.
- A white stone with a new name — acceptance, intimacy, and eternal reward.
