This week, Pastor Chris continued in our Hebrews series with a message about enduring in faith. The Christian life is like a race that requires endurance, focus, and faithfulness. God calls us to lay aside every weight that hinders us, fix our eyes on Jesus, and trust His loving discipline to shape us into His likeness. As we run, we are strengthened not only by His grace but also by the encouragement of others, enabling us to finish well and bring glory to Him.
1. Free, Focused, and Faithful Endurance
Hebrews 12:1 (ESV)
1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
1 Corinthians 9:24–25 (ESV)
24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. 25 Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.
Hebrews 12:2 (ESV)
2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrews 12:3 (ESV)
3 Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.
2. Disciplined Endurance
Hebrews 12:4–6 (ESV)
4 In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. 5 And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. 6 For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.”
“God loves you just the way you are, but He refuses to leave you that way.” Max Lucado
Proverbs 29:15, 17 (ESV)
15 The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother. 17 Discipline your son, and he will give you rest; he will give delight to your heart.
Proverbs 13:24 (ESV)
24 Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.
Proverbs 3:11–12 (ESV)
11 My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline or be weary of his reproof, 12 for the Lord reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights.
Hebrews 12:7–11 (ESV)
7 It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? 8 If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. 9 Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. 11 For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
Why does God discipline us?
- Discipline is an act of love…it’s parental and purposeful not harsh vengeance (Heb. 12:6).
- The purpose of discipline is growth and holiness…it trains and corrects us (Heb. 12:10-11).
- Being disciplined is a sign we belong to God (Heb. 12:8).
How to Respond to God’s Discipline
- Don’t despise it – Understand it’s from love.
- Repent and adjust – Ask what God is teaching.
- Trust Him – Even if the path is hard.
- Grow through it – Let it shape your character.
3. Strengthened Endurance
Hebrews 12:12–15 (ESV)
12 Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, 13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed. 14 Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. 15 See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled
Deuteronomy 29:18 (ESV)
18 Beware lest there be among you a man or woman or clan or tribe whose heart is turning away today from the Lord our God to go and serve the gods of those nations. Beware lest there be among you a root bearing poisonous and bitter fruit,
Hebrews 12:16–17 (ESV)
16 that no one is sexually immoral or unholy like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal. 17 For you know that afterward, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no chance to repent, though he sought it with tears.
Discussion Questions:
- What does it mean to “lay aside every weight and sin”? What might some of those “weights” look like in our lives today?
- How have the examples of other believers (the “great cloud of witnesses”) encouraged your faith journey? How can remembering that discipline comes from a loving Father change the way we respond to challenges?
- What is one specific step you can take this week to “run with endurance” in your faith journey?
Application Question:
- Where might you need to “make straight paths” in your own life to stay strong in faith?
